The top teams from the Virginia State Babe Ruth League are headed to Charlottesville this week, as Northside gets ready to host the state tournament. The home team kicks off play with a game against Glen Allen on Thursday at 9 a.m. at the Fields at Hollymead.
"I was really excited because I've played for Northside since I was in tee ball," shortstop and second baseman Bryson Alley said of being the home team. "I've been on a lot of all-star teams and this is my last year, so I'm really excited."
"We're all motivated to come out there and try to win," said pitcher and first baseman Tristen Propes. "Now we're in the state tournament. It's going to be really fun."
Northside was the runner-up in the district this season, with Rockville taking the district win. Manager Eric Lane says his team has improved throughout the season after a slow start, and now Northside is hoping to take advantage of their home field advantage in the state tournament.
"I think they're all thrilled just to be here, have a lot of the fans, family, and be able to sleep in their own beds, that's a nice advantage," said Lane. "We're all really excited. Hopefully going to play hard and play well."
"I am most looking forward to play and just playing hard," added pitcher and infielder Clayton Walther. "I think we're pretty confident that we can win. We've played some of these teams before and I think we can win."
The winner of the tournament will advance to the Babe Ruth League Regional Tournament that will be played the following weekend in Lewisburg, Tennessee.
