O'Connor: Offense Hasn't Reached Potential

After wrapping up another series win at Miami over the weekend, the No. 3 Virginia baseball team returned home this week to start a six-game homestand.

While the 'Hoos were able to take two of three games from the Hurricanes, UVa struggled to take advantage of baserunners, like they have at other times during the season. Head coach Brian O'Connor isn't worried about his team's occasional offensive struggles early in the season.

"So much was made of our offensive ball club because of so many of the veterans returning," he said Tuesday. "I made no bones about it by saying it's still going to come down to pitching and defense, that's what shows up every day.

"I still don't feel like our offensive team has reached its potential and that's ok. There's a lot of baseball left. We're in the position right now, we're just trying to grind it out and get some guys going. Brandon Cogswell had a big weekend and he's getting going now. I thought Joe McCarthy put some better, consistent swings on the ball, and Nick Howard's doing well. Hopefully as those guys continue to catch fire, it'll make more offensive output each and every ballgame."

The 'Hoos were on the road as the NCAA basketball tournament kicked off last weekend, but O'Connor says he and his team are among the many fans rooting for UVa. O'Connor adds that his team can draw from the Cavaliers' success in many ways.

"The fact that they win the regular season and conference championship without having a player average more than 13 points is just incredible to me. I mean it speaks to the team concept, and them knowing and understanding what kind of team they have to be to be successful. So I think it's a terrific lesson to our baseball program, or any other team."

The Cavaliers are scheduled to host Longwood on Wednesday at Davenport Field, in the first meeting between the schools since the 2008 season. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
