Oest Looks Sharp in UVa Home Opener

Trey Oest was on the bus ride back from East Carolina when he learned he'd be making his college debut as No. 25 Virginia's starting pitcher on Monday against Saint Peter's.

But the freshman right-hander looked unfazed by the short notice, giving up just one hit in six shutout innings and getting his first college win, as the Cavaliers improved to 3-0 with a 9-1 win in their home opener.

"Trey Oest was outstanding," Virginia coach Brian O'Connor said after the game. "In his first collegiate start, obviously that's a lot of pressure on a young man, and he certainly responded. It was great to see him pitch out of a jam in one of those innings. I just thought he was in complete control of the ballgame."

"It wasn't nerves, just more excitement and I was anxious to get out there, make my debut," said Oest, who took a no-hitter into the sixth inning. "It gives me a lot of confidence just to know that I can make it through college baseball as a pitcher. It's definitely a big boost and helpful, especially knowing the defense is behind me, and they're giving me the runs I need."

Sophomore outfielder Brandon Downes led the Cavaliers at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a solo homer, his first of the year, and three runs scored. Sophomore shortstop Branden Cogswell also went 3-for-4, and stole a pair of bases.

Oest and two freshmen relievers, Cameron Tekker and David Rosenberger, combined to allow just four hits and two walks in the win.
