Papi Leads 'Hoos in Rout of JMU

Mike Papi hit two home runs in three innings as the UVa baseball team's offense recovered from a slow weekend to take down James Madison, 13-2, Tuesday at Davenport Field.

The Cavaliers scored just seven runs in three games against Duke over the weekend, but finished with 16 hits and 12 RBI on their way to a 13-run performance over the Dukes.

Papi started the scoring in the first inning with a solo home run, giving the Cavaliers a 1-0 lead. With the game tied at 1-1 in the third, he hit his second homer of the day, a two-run shot over the bleachers in right field to put UVa up for good.

The 'Hoos kept the inning going with a walk and a single to be followed by an RBI single to center by Nate Irving. Following a pitching change, Kenny Towns singled to left center to make it 5-1. With the bases loaded, Branden Cogswell hit a single down the left-field line to plate two more to make it 7-1. Daniel Pinero added another two-run single to make it 9-1 in the third.

UVa tacked on three runs in the sixth and another in the seventh. Cogswell finished 3-for-4 with a walk, two runs and three RBIs. Pinero was also 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Irving and Towns had two hits each.

With the win, the Cavaliers are now 12-3 on the season. They will play their next five games at home, starting with Boston College on Friday.
