LaChaston Smith couldn't even get to his first practice of the summer at Virginia without switching positions.
UVa announced on Thursday that Smith will practice with the running backs when the Cavaliers open preseason camp on Monday. Smith played linebacker in practices last spring, after enrolling early at UVa in January.
Smith will also switch jersey numbers, to No. 30.
Smith played both positions at South Iredell High School in North Carolina, where he was regarded as a three-star recruit by both 247Sports and Rivals, and a four-star recruit by ESPN. He missed most of his senior year with a leg injury, but returned to rush for 159 yards and three touchdowns -- including the game-winner with 19 seconds left -- in the Vikings' 30-27 win in the AA state title game.
