Albemarle High School volleyball coach Mark Ragland became the first coach in Virginia high school volleyball history to ever win 500 games Monday night. Ragland reached the milestone when the Patriots swept Brooke Point 3-0.
"What's neat about when you get to 500, it's not about the 500th win, it's about all the kids you've coached in the process," Ragland said Tuesday. "Today, I heard from a bunch of my former players, and it was just some really neat interaction with them."
The Patriots are off to the best start in the program's history, and improved to 19-0 with a 3-0 win over North Stafford Tuesday night. The win over Brooke Point gave Ragland his 500th career win and also broke the Albemarle volleyball record for the best start to a season, which was previously 17-0, set by the 2000 team.
"We all were really happy and proud of ourselves, and we were all really happy for coach, and happy to share that moment with him," said senior Colleen Marshal.
Fellow senior Caroline Porco added, "he's such a great coach, and he's so good to us, and always cares about us. I think that helps a lot with us playing. He brings us together and it helps us win."
