ALAMEDA, California — The Oakland Raiders have signed former New England cornerback Ras-I Dowling to their practice squad.
Dowling played nine games for the Patriots in 2011-12 after being drafted in the second round out of UVa. He spent last season on the New York Jets' practice squad and was released by the Jets last week after being hampered by foot and groin injuries in training camp.
Dowling was one of nine players added to Oakland's practice squad on Monday.
Also on Monday, Raiders head coach Dennis Allen announced that rookie Derek Carr -- and not former Cavalier Matt Schaub -- would start Oakland's season opener against the Jets.
Carr will be the first rookie to start the season opener at quarterback in Raiders history. Carr was a second-round pick out of Fresno State in May. He will become the 18th starting quarterback for the Raiders since the start of the 2003 season.
Schaub struggled in the preseason and has been hampered by a sore elbow.
