His name is synonymous with basketball at Fluvanna County, and Friday night he was honored for surpassing a career milestone.

Munro Rateau was celebrated before the Flucos' game against Orange County with a game ball and plaque for his recent 500th victory.

The long-time Fluco coach clinched the milestone with a 49-48 win over Rustburg in late December.

He's been at Fluvanna for 33 years and led the Flucos to four state title game appearances with a pair of championships.

"We've had great players, great family support from our players," Rateau explained. "And I've had great assistants. All of that combined gives us a chance to win games and I've just been fortunate enough to have that all in my background."

Many of Rateau's former players were on hand Friday night to watch the Flucos beat the Hornets 58-47, and to see their former coach receive his honor.

"I got some texts and phone calls over the last couple of weeks from kids that played for me 20 years ago. And that's what makes coaching what it is and how enjoyable it is," he said. "We have kids that stay around the program and I know a lot of them come to every game still. So that really makes me pleased."

Rateau adds it's not just the players and coaches that have contributed to his success over the years.

"I know out of all the games, my wife's only missed 15 of them so she's been involved just as much as I have and she's been a trooper with me."
