After a year away from the central Virginia sidelines, Rodney Redd is back in an area he knows quite well.
Redd is the new defensive coordinator at Albemarle High School after spending last season at the collegiate level as the defensive backs coach at Virginia State University.
When first-year AHS head coach Brandon Isaiah needed someone to make the defensive calls for the Patriots this fall, he relied on his old friend.
"It's the best of both worlds," Isaiah said recently. "He's been my friend for years and professionally, he's given me opportunities to grow as a coach. To have him here by my side to push me and help me, it's a great feeling."
Central Virginia football fans will remember Redd well, first from his days as an assistant at Monticello to Brud Bicknell, to one season as head coach at Fluvanna County, followed by two successful years as head coach at Monticello.
Isaiah was an assistant to Redd at MHS, and now the two friends are
reunited as Patriots.
"You see him out here, he's just an energy guy. I think it's fun to watch him now because he's purely a defensive coordinator, he's not the head coach so he can kind of cut loose a little bit more," Isaiah explained. "Now I have to kind of be the calm guy, keep a balance. But it's fun watching him enjoy himself out here, he's telling me how much he's enjoying the process. So for me to provide this platform for him to enjoy himself and impact these young men, it's just a really good feeling."
