Reid Among UVa Assistants Relieved of Duties

Four Virginia football assistants are now looking for work, about a week after the Cavaliers wrapped up a disappointing 4-8 2012 season.

The school announced Sunday that four assistant coaches had been fired, including defensive coordinator Jim Reid. All four coaches had been members of head coach Mike London's staff since he took over the program three years ago.

Defensive line coach Jeff Hanson, tight ends coach Shawn Moore, and running backs coach Mike Faragalli were also relieved of their duties. Also, safeties coach Anthony Poindexter will no longer coach Virginia's special teams.

"The decision to release these four coaches is very difficult, but one I feel is necessary in order to meet the goals we have set for the Virginia football program," London said in a school-issued release. "I have coached with some of these men for many years, won a national championship with some, and I truly appreciate their dedication and commitment, and more importantly, their friendships. I wish them all the best."

Hanson and Faragalli both made the move from Richmond to Virginia with London when he took over the Cavalier program in December 2009. Both were assistants when the London-coached Spiders won the 2008 FCS national championship.
