STAB Alum Jones Scores First College Points

Jeff Jones only has 848 points to go before catching his father on the all-time scoring list at Virginia.

Jones -- a walk-on freshman who played his prep basketball across town at St. Anne's-Belfield -- scored the first two points of his college career in UVa's 69-40 win against Hampton Tuesday night at John Paul Jones Arena.

The points came on a layup in the closing minute of Tuesday's game. And with the bucket came a rather large ovation from one section of JPJ.

"I actually had, all my friends from high school were here," Jones said after the game. "And my advisor from high school was here, too. So I think they made most of the noise. It was pretty cool."

"They were all waiting for me," Jones added. "Right after Coach Bennett talked to us at the end of the game, I ran back out there. Gave them all hugs. It was really cool."

Jones is the son of former Virginia point guard and head coach Jeff Jones, who is in his first season as head coach at Old Dominion. His father ended his UVa career with 850 points and 598 assists, and was a team captain as a senior in 1981-82.

The younger Jones averaged 13.6 points and 9.5 rebounds as a senior at STAB last season, and was named team MVP for the Saints. He has appeared in four games this season for UVa, after joining the team as a walk-on before the season.

"The guys are really nice. They don't treat us like walk-ons at all," Jones said. "We're part of the team. A really nice dynamic."
