For the first time ever, the Covenant football team will enter their matchup with St. Anne's-Belfield coming off a win in the series. The Eagles beat the Saints for the first time last season, winning 21-13 in overtime. The two rivals will meet again Friday at STAB.
"It takes a little pressure off now that we beat them for the first time," says Covenant senior tight end and linebacker Spencer Godine. "Now we'll go into it full-speed. This will be my last game, so just go after it, don't take one play off."
The Eagles are more confident after beating STAB, but they will come into this year's game on three-game losing streak. Covenant's offense stalled last week in a 34-0 loss to Virginia Episcopal.
"We learned a lot from our loss," said Covenant junior running back and defensive back Quane Washington. "We're just moving on from that, we're looking forward to our next three games, to finish the season out strong."
The Saints are coming off back-to-back wins, and bring a 2-4 record into their rivalry game on Friday.
"We're feeling pretty good, we've won two in a row now, I feel like we're getting our energy back," said STAB junior linebacker Minor Smith. "We're really looking forward to playing them because we lost last year."
Before winning two games in a row, the Saints had lost 14 straight, including an 0-10 finish last season. After getting back on the winning track, head coach John Blake says they're more confident than they've been in a long time.
"I'm glad we got a couple wins beforehand, because I would hate to go in there without a win, just to put a little more pressure on us to do that," said Blake. "High school football is like all high school athletics, I mean the more confident the kids are, the better they are."
