Bowen Sargent finished runner-up in last year's City Championship.

He's doing his best to ensure that doesn't happen again.

The Virginia golf coach followed up his first round 70 with a Saturday-best 66 to lead play at Meadowcreek after 36 holes.

Sargent holds a commanding nine-shot lead over the next closest golfer.

He did most of his damage on the back nine, where he birdied Holes 10, 12, 13 and 16 to distance himself from the field.

Phil Mahone, the 2012 Champion, was tied with Sargent at -1 after Friday but the two-time winner had an up-and-down second round, finishing at five-over 71.

Lance Hoover entered Saturday just one stroke behind Sargent and Mahone after an even-par opening round. He moved into second place with a 74 on Saturday.

Mahone is tied with Hunter Weaver and Chuck Crenshaw for third at +4.

Final round play begins Sunday at 7:30 a.m.
