Former Virginia forward Mike Scott will be spending the next week in Las Vegas. But his visit isn't a vacation; it's a business trip.
Scott, taken by the Atlanta Hawks in the second round of last month's NBA Draft, will make his team debut on Friday when the Hawks face the Washington Wizards in the opener of the Las Vegas Summer League.
Scott did a lot of the heavy lifting for Virginia during his final college season -- he was an All-ACC selection after averaging 18 points and eight rebounds per game -- but he says his job with the Hawks will be to do the little things.
"Rebound, be a role player, have a high motor, and hit open shots," Scott said. "When you press you just force a lot, and I think sometimes I press, and sometimes I don't take my time in the post. But if I just slow down, I'll be fine."
Scott and his summer league teammates arrived in Las Vegas on Thursday, following the conclusion of a two-day rookie camp in Atlanta. Scott says he spent his practice time focused on one end of the floor.
"Just trying to learn the new defense," he said. "It's kind of a transition going from college, and learning NBA defenses. But for the most part I'm just trying to compete and learn."
The Hawks and Wizards open the NBA Las Vegas Summer League schedule at 4 p.m. ET Friday. It's the first of five games the Hawks will play over the course of the next week.
