Semi-Pro Silverbacks Make Debut at Home Opener

July 23, 2011

Saturday night marked the home opener for Charlottesville's own semi-pro football team. The first-year Virginia Silverbacks made their debut for the home crown at Monticello High School hosting the Fredericksburg Falcons. The Silverbacks jumped out to a 6-0 halftime lead and never looked back in a 24-6 win, improving to 3-0 on the season.

The team is led by former Charlottesville coach Randy Jones and his 43-year-old quarterback and captain, Jamie Davis. Davis is also a CHS graduate.

The Silverbacks got on the board first. Davis connected with Rayshad Brown on a deep passing play, and as Brown was being tackled, he lateraled the ball to Jonathan Carey, and he took it into the end zone for the touchdown. The Silverbacks led 6-0 after a missed PAT, and they would hold on to that lead at the half.

The Silverbacks then struck again on the opening drive of the second half. Davis found Carey on the sideline, and he stretched the ball inside the pylon for the team's second touchdown of the night. The Silverbacks would add 12 more points on their way to the 24-6 win.

The Silverbacks are a member of the Mason-Dixon football league, a 13-team field split into two divisions.
