Abby Bowman was a back-row player her first three years on the Madison County volleyball team. This year, she made the switch to the leadership position of libero.
"I've always played back row and I made varsity as a freshman so through all the years I've always been back row," Bowman said. "Then this year I finally got the spot to play it and it was awesome."
"She doesn't give up. She'll chase any ball down," Madison coach Carol Nowakoski said. "She played libero last year so she was pretty much heads up the one coming in. We tried a few more in the spot here and there but she was basically the permanent spot here."
Bowman cites math as her favorite subject in the classroom and uses it to her advantage on the court.
"Well you think about spots, and aiming on the other side. And then when you get a ball served to you, you already know where its going to go, so you can read it."
Busy as she is on the court, Bowman is just as busy off it. In addition to carrying a 4.0 GPA, she's also involved in numerous clubs at Madison and works two part-time jobs on weekends, making time management crucial.
"This year was probably the hardest because I have two jobs. So I have to look at my schedule, look at practices and have to arrange everything so I can make everything happen."
After graduation Bowman would like to study marine biology at UNC-Wilmington or Virginia Tech. Until then, she'll continue to balance her role as a student-athlete.
"You have a reputation. You don't want to be just a good athlete and a poor student. You want to have good grades and maintain a good GPA to be a good athlete too."
