Student Athlete of the Week -- Alex Montes de Oca

Swimming is a sport where timing is everything.

A star in the pool, Alex Montes de Oca knows how to handle that time out of the water as well.

The Orange County senior carries a 4.0 GPA, is Vice President of both the National Honor Society and Spanish Club and is an Academic All-American.

"It's just awesome to get recognition for both swimming and in the classroom," Montes de Oca said. "Just to achieve awesome ranks in both."

Meeting the demands of being a top swimmer and student can be daunting, but Montes de Oca welcomes the challenge.

"It's really tough because sometimes I don't get as much sleep as I should be getting. Actually a lot of times. But just knowing it will all pay off in the end helps me get through it."

"You know swimmers are a great group to coach because they have to have time management," Orange County swim coach Ryan Campbell added. "And he has mastered that as can clearly be seen by being an Academic All-American and also doing as well as he has on the swimming side."

Montes de Oca recently competed at the Group AAA state meet, considered by many to be the fastest meet in the Commonwealth. He finished top-5 in a pair of events and was a top-10 performer overall.

His achievements, both in the water and academically, have earned him a spot at William & Mary in the fall. Montes de Oca knows his time in the pool will eventually come to an end, so hitting the books will take on an equally important role.

"After college I won't be swimming so the academic part is definitely a huge part of everything.'

"I think he's going to be a leader just like he is here," Campbell added. "And they're going to get someone who's going to work just as hard in the classroom as in the pool. It doesn't really matter. He's going to give it 110%."
