Student Athlete of the Week -- Jane Schmidt, Covenant

For four years, Jane Schmidt has been the oldest swimmer on her Covenant swimming team, which is one reason why she is a four-year captain for the Eagles.

"It's been great," Schmidt says of her leadership role. "I've gotten to see our team build up and get bigger, and kind of gotten to be a leader for some of those girls."

Schmidt has watched the team grow in numbers and grow as a family during her four years.

"I've just really loved, especially this year, seeing girls who really enjoy swimming and just really love the sport and have been getting better at it," she said. "I know they're working hard and want to get better at it."

According to Covenant swimming coach Bethany Branson, it's not just the team that's grown in the last few years.

"It's been really exciting to watch her grow and mature," Branson says of Schmidt. She added that she's enjoyed "watching her really step into that role and embrace it, and really turn the younger girls into a team and make them friends and just really build the atmosphere on the team."

Schmidt is an honor roll student at Covenant, who is thinking about majoring in education and wants to become a teacher.

Before she takes the next step, the Eagles' captain had some unfinished business to take care of in the pool. She ended her Covenant swimming career on a high note, making it to states for the first time ever.

"This year was the first time that we got two relays of girls to states in a while, so that was exciting just to all get through that together," Schmidt said.

"Getting her to states and watching her walk down the pool deck with the senior parade and just celebrating her, it was so exciting," added Branson. "I think she was really excited, and all the coaches were really proud of her for sticking it out."
