For years, Sarah Woods has been a leader for the Albemarle volleyball team, both vocally and statistically.

"What she brings to the team from an enthusiasm standpoint, a leadership standpoint, and a consistency standpoint is amazing," said Patriots volleyball coach Mark Ragland.

As a sophomore, Woods was an outside hitter and led the team in kills. Last season she switched to the middle, and led the team in blocks and hitting percentage.

"I enjoy it, you block a lot more which is always fun," Woods says of her switch to the middle. "It's a different kind of swing and approach to it, but it was easy, with Coach Ragland's help it was easy to make the transition quickly and I've enjoyed both positions."

"She's very smart," adds Ragland. "She is a good athlete, and probably not the strongest athlete on our team when it comes to the front row, but she uses her head so well that she really does some deceiving things and puts the ball in great places."

Woods has a 4.6 GPA and has learned to use her intelligence to her advantage on the court.

"We have some amazing hard hitters on our team," she said. "I know I can't hit as hard as they can, so I guess seeing the smart plays or the places that are open, that's what's helped me I guess do well in the position I've been put at."

Woods uses her intelligence on the court to make a difference in the game, but she also uses her love for volleyball to make a difference in the community. Recently, she’s been working with the local special Olympics as a volleyball coach.

"Volleyball has just been such a big part of my life that I really enjoyed being able to go back and give back and teach others how to play it," Woods says of her time coaching. "I was talking to my mom and dad last week, and I was telling them just how fun it is to get to see the looks of excitement on their face when they get a skill and just the way they go about doing everything, which is awesome for me to be able to give back that way."
