Madison County point guard Timberly Deane likes things that are difficult. In school, she loves calculus, and on the basketball court, she enjoys working on her defense.

"Tim may leave a game with zero points, and most people think it was a lousy game," head coach Katherine Johnson says of her senior captain. "But for us, Tim, when we put Tim in, it's always to guard the best player on the other team. And she loves that role, you know, she is the stopper for us."

"I'm not really one to score, per se," says Deane. "I like to have assists and I like defense, so I like to be more of a team-helper than like, a scorer."

Deane might not fill up the stat sheet, but she is a leader on the floor for Madison, as a team captain.

"She's quiet, and Tim leads more by what she does, versus what she says. Although she's still soft-spoken, the kids know that Tim's our leader," adds Johnson.

Academically, Deane ranks fifth in her class. Showing her competitive spirit, she says she hopes to move up even higher in her class rankings.

"I'm kind of a nerd, like I like school, but also I like getting good grades so I try to do my best and work my hardest in the hardest classes."

While taking the hardest classes, Deane has played both basketball and softball for the Mountaineers. She says sometimes the workload has been overwhelming, but rewarding at the same time.

"It's mostly during softball cause we have like three hour practices. We have really long practices and I get behind and I'm like, 'I don't want to do this anymore.' But it's definitely worth it in the end."

"She's great at what she does and that's academic-wise and athletic-wise," Johnson says of Deane's versatility. "She plays two sports and plays them both well. So that confidence is all over Tim, and I think this year more so than any other year."
