After leading his team to a perfect regular season and 24-1-1 overall record, Virginia head coach Steve Swanson was named the 2013 NSCAA/Field Turf Division I Women’s National Coach of the Year. The honor was announced Tuesday by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
Swanson becomes the first national coach of the year in the program’s history.
The Cavaliers captured the first ACC regular-season title in school history this season, and Swanson was named the ACC Coach of the Year.
Virginia reached the NCAA Women’s College Cup for the first time in 22 seasons before falling in penalty kicks to eventual-national champion UCLA in the semifinals.
The 'Hoos set numerous school records in 2013, including 24 wins, 78 goals and 16 shutouts. The Cavaliers opened the season with a school-record 20-game win streak and were ranked No. 1 in the nation for most of the season.
Earlier this month, Swanson was announced as the head coach of the United States U-23 National Team.
