Tandem Friends School retired the No. 44 jersey of former basketball standout Matt Mahoney Thursday evening prior to the team's matchup with Eastern Mennonite.
Mahoney is an '11 alum of the school and finished with 1,749 points in his career. He joins girls basketball star Hattie Nguyen as the only two Badgers to be honored.
"It definitely means a lot, being the first male to get my jersey retired here at Tandem," Mahoney said. "Obviously it's a great accomplishment, I couldn't have done it without all the great coaching I've had over the years."
Mahoney was a Delaney Conference MVP or Co-MVP in three of his four years at Tandem.
He was second-team All-Central Virginia in 2010 and averaged a double-double at 30.5 points per game and 10.5 rebounds his four years as a Badger.
Mahoney led the Tandem team to three Delaney Athletic Conference Regular Season Championships and three Tournament Championships.
"I definitely think (the honor) is more a reflection of that Tandem basketball is becoming a bigger force in the Charlottesville area than it used to be and hopefully starting to get taken a little more seriously."
