Albemarle High School was full of Virginia youth football players Saturday as the Thomas Jefferson Youth Football League held a food drive to help support the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank.
Forty teams from around the Commonwealth, from Richmond to Culpeper and everywhere in between, packed the fields at Albemarle for the cause.
Each player was asked to bring two canned items with them to the games and with 40 teams involved, a lot of food was donated to the food bank.
More importantly, however, the event gave TJYFL organizers an opportunity to teach the young players a valuable lesson about giving back to their community.
"Part of this is, what are you willing to do for others and think about others?" explained TJYFL President Michael Talbert. "That's where the food bank came in."
"Some of the kids talked about children that they'd seen that weren't able to play football, for whatever reason, and we got the idea that if we got some food around this time, Thanksgiving, Halloween, to give back to some of those families, some of those kids, it would help the kids be more aware and more appreciative of what they're doing and work harder to become better humans, better citizens and again, more productive in our society."
