Kenny Towns' 3-run home run in the bottom of the 12th inning pushed Virginia past Florida State, 7-4, Saturday in the Cavaliers' final game at the ACC Tournament in Durham.
Derek Fisher walked to lead off the 12th and advanced to second on a passed ball. Reed Gragnani was then intentionally walked, putting two on with nobody out. After Nick Howard lined out to center, Towns stepped to the plate and lofted the game-winner over the big blue wall in left.
Towns led the Wahoos with four RBI on the day, and ACC Freshman of the Year Joe McCarthy had a three-hit day, including a solo home run in the third. Four other Cavs had multiple-hit days as well.
Virginia starter Whit Mayberry went 5.1 innings with three earned runs. Kyle Crockett came on in the eighth and gave Virginia four solid innings, allowing just two FSU hits with six strikeouts.
The game was tied 1-1 in the sixth until the Seminoles got to Mayberry for a pair runs and reliever Austin Young for another score. Virginia got two runs back in the bottom of the sixth, then tied the game in the eighth on a Mike Papi RBI single that scored Towns.
Virginia will now await its NCAA Regional fate. Those pairings will be announced Sunday night.
