UVA MEDIA DAY: QBs Ready to Open Competition

It's been a common storyline at the Virginia football team's media day the past few years -- Mike London and his team facing a barrage of questions about the quarterback position.

But unlike the last two seasons -- when the Cavaliers entered camp with an open competition at the position, and didn't name a starter until the week of their season opener -- the picture is a bit clearer this season.

But not quite clear enough for London to name a starter when asked on Friday.

"We haven't even practiced yet," the UVa coach answered with a laugh.

Redshirt sophomore David Watford will begin practice next week as the team's No. 1 quarterback, with redshirt freshman Greyson Lambert challenging for the job.

"I feel like even though Coach London has named me No. 1 going into camp, I feel like that doesn't mean anything," said Watford, who redshirted last fall after appearing in 10 games as a true freshman in 2011.

"I still have a lot of work to do. Not only to prove to everybody else that I'm the guy," Watford said. "But just to prove, not really to myself, but just let everybody know so it leaves no doubt."

Lambert enrolled early at UVa in January 2012, then redshirted last fall as well.

"I mean, I came here wanting to play for the University of Virginia," he said. "I was recruited by these guys. And I love Charlottesville, I love the team. I feel like we're all a huge family. So being able to play for this team would be a great honor."

London reiterated Friday what he said last month at the ACC media kickoff -- that he hoped to settle on a starter early in camp, well before the Cavaliers kick off the 2013 season against BYU on August 31.

"Early could be "early" early," he said. "But we want to be able to just get them in. Our first practice is Monday."

"It'll be early, and there won't be any issues with who will be the guy, because we'll give him plenty of reps to get ready for the season."
