UVa Winning Streak Comes to End vs. Keydets

Mike Papi gave Virginia an early lead with his bat Tuesday afternoon at Davenport Field. But he gave it back a half-inning later with his glove.

Papi was charged with an error when he couldn't field Kenny Towns' throw from third base, which allowed VMI to score the go-ahead run in the fourth inning of the Keydets' visit to UVa. VMI added one more in the eighth inning, then held off a UVa rally in the ninth to beat the top-ranked Cavaliers 3-2.

The loss snapped UVa's winning streak at six straight games. The streak began with a 12-0 win against the Keydets in Wilmington, N.C., over the Cavaliers' opening weekend.

Papi hit a solo homer to right in the bottom of the third inning to give UVa an early 1-0 lead. But VMI tied the game on a Matt Winn squeeze bunt in the top of the fourth, and took the lead on Papi's error.

Brandon Angus gave VMI an insurance run with an RBI single in the eighth. Papi led off the bottom of the ninth with a single to right, and eventually scored on a Brandon Downes grounder. Derek Fisher followed Downes' ground-out with by flying out to left field, ending the ball game with the tying run on second base.

Whit Mayberry took the loss for the Cavaliers after giving up VMI's two fourth-inning runs. Mayberry was forced to make the emergency start for UVa after scheduled starter Artie Lewicki was scratched after warming up in the bullpen.

Campbell Henkel and Taylor Edens combined to limit the Cavaliers to two runs on six hits.
