Field Hockey:

The No. 18 Cavaliers (4-5) fell to Northwestern Sunday 5-3. Chelsea Armstrong added a hat trick for the Wildcats who rallied from a two-goal deficit at halftime. Freshman Kelsey LeBlanc and sophomore Lane Smith each notched their first career goals for the Cavaliers in the loss. Northwestern improves to 7-2 on the season.

Virginia outshot Northwestern 12-11, including a 7-3 advantage in the first half. Northwestern, however, registered 11 penalty corners, scoring on two of them. The Cavaliers finished with seven corners.

Virginia's Jenny Johnstone recorded three saves in 44 minutes of time. Senior Adrienne Ostroff played the final 26 minutes and recorded one save; freshman Maddie DeCerbo also had a defensive save for the Cavaliers.

Virginia returns home to the University Hall Turf Field Friday for the ACC opener against Boston College. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Women's Soccer:

In their first road game of the regular season No. 14 Virginia suffered a 2-0 loss to No. 18 Boston College Sunday. The Cavaliers fall to 7-2-1 overall, 1-1 in the ACC. The Eagles remain unbeaten at 6-0-2, 1-0 in conference play.

After a scoreless first half, BC tallied the game's first goal in the 52nd minute and converted a penalty kick for insurance in the 70th minute.

"It was a disappointing result, given the game," said head coach Steve Swanson. "We played some good soccer in spurts, but we were not consistent enough. We are getting punished for the mistakes we make. We played well enough to win, but we can't keep shooting ourselves in the foot."

The Cavaliers continue their four-game road trip next Sunday as they visit No. 7 North Carolina. Game time in Chapel Hill is 3 p.m. on ESPNU.
