Virginia senior linebacker Steve Greer is one of three finalists for the Dudley Award, which goes to the best Division I football player in the state each season.
The award is named after former Virginia All-American running back "Bullet" Bill Dudley. This year's finalists were announced by the Touchdown Club of Richmond on Monday, with the winner to be announced on Wednesday night in Richmond.
Greer is coming off an All-ACC season for the Cavaliers, finishing second in the conference with 122 tackles. His season totals also included 9.0 tackles-for-loss, and a pair of sacks.
Virginia hasn't had a player win the Dudley since 2007, when Chris Long was a unanimous selection. The Cavaliers have had seven winners since the award was first given in 1990, but only two since the turn of the century -- Long and wide receiver Billy McMullen (2001).
Greer is the only FBS player among the three finalists. He's joined on the list by Old Dominion sophomore quarterback Taylor Heinicke and James Madison junior linebacker Stephon Robertson. Heinicke's 4,655 passing yards and 41 touchdowns both led all of FCS football this season; Robertson led the Dukes with 101 tackles, and added an interception and a sack.
JMU quarterback Rodney Landers was the last FCS player to win the award, back in 2008.
Last year, running back David Wilson became the third straight Virginia Tech player to win the award. Hokies have won six of the last eight Dudley awards, but Frank Beamer's program doesn't have a player among this year's finalists.
