Ask Greyson Lambert how much he has learned from the three veteran quarterbacks competing for the starting job at Virginia, and he gives a one-word answer.
"Everything," says Lambert, a true freshman who has been enrolled at Virginia since January.
Junior Michael Rocco, last year's starting quarterback at Virginia, is being pushed by sophomores David Watford and Phillip Sims this summer. Lambert and fellow first-year quarterback Matt Johns are also getting reps in practice with the Cavaliers.
"I'll ask them, "On this play your reads are this, this, this, and this. But what if you get this scenario?" Lambert says. "I mean, we all watch film together. We're all working together."
"It's pretty competitive, but it's always fun," he adds. "Competition just makes everyone better."
The decision to enroll early gave Lambert the opportunity to practice with the Cavaliers as the team's third quarterback last spring. The position got more crowded when Sims transferred from Alabama in May, and Johns arrived for his first college season this summer.
Both Lambert and head coach Mike London agree that Lambert's head start last spring is already paying dividends.
"By now I've kind of learned all the concepts, and I've got them all down," says Lambert. "During the spring I was kind of running around with no clue what I was doing. So now that I've gone through the spring and the summer, I'm starting to see some of the same things, and it's starting to come together."
"Having the ability to get the reps, know the offense, be involved in the meetings, and then coming back out to camp, there's a lot of recall for him," London says. "Greyson is a young player that will be a good quarterback here when it's his time to step up."
