The names may change, but the number one question around the UVa football team always seems to stay the same: the quarterback.
New Cavaliers offensive coordinator Steve Fairchild discussed his stance on the issue on Tuesday, saying it will be an open competition this spring.
"I think everybody would like to settle on a starting quarterback. We'll have a very spirited competition going in. I think we've got some guys that have ability. I'm quite confident that coming out of spring we'll have a guy that will play well for us."
Fairchild comes to Virginia with 31 years of coaching experience at both the NFL and collegiate levels, including 16 seasons as an offensive coordinator. Most recently Fairchild was the senior offensive assistant for the San Diego Chargers. Before that, he was the head coach at Colorado State for four years.
"We'll go in with a pro-style approach," Fairchild said of his plans for the UVa offense. "We'll want to both run the ball and throw it, and bring a very physical mentality to our run game, and try to spread the field the best we can throwing it, and try to get some big play capability out of the passing game."
