Virginia guard Joe Harris fractured a bone in his left, non-shooting hand Saturday in the team's 70-52 loss at North Carolina. The sophomore starter suffered the injury in the first half and played with his hand wrapped in the second half. After the game, Harris said he was unsure how the injury occurred.

A statement released by Virginia Sunday said the injury is a 'stable fracture' and and will require immediate surgery. Harris will continue to play with his hand protected. Team officials say he will be closely monitored.

Harris has started at 24 games this season for the Cavaliers. He is averaging 12.5 points and 4.1 rebounds a game, which ranks second on the team in both categories behind Mike Scott. At North Carolina, Harris finished with eight points and five rebounds.

Virginia returns to action Tuesday February 14 at Clemson.

The release from UVA says, "The stable fracture will be managed without an operation at this time. Harris' hand will be protected when he plays and he will be closely monitored." without an operation at this time, not immediate surgery.
