Virginia Offense Continues to Hum in Rout of North Carolina

The Virginia bats continued to stay red hot Thursday as the Cavaliers trounced North Carolina, 10-4, in the first game of a crucial series in Chapel Hill. Virginia needs to sweep the Tar Heels to win the Coastal Division and claim the top seed in the ACC Tournament.

Mike Papi finished the night with three hits and a pair of RBI, Nate Irving also added three hits and four other Cavaliers added multiple knocks in the hit parade.

The Wahoos tallied 17 hits in total, the fourth straight game they've collected 10-plus hits and scored 10-plus runs.

Irving got the scoring started in the second with an RBI single, followed by a Papi RBI groundout to make it 2-0.

After Carolina took a 3-2 lead in the third, Virginia answered in the fourth and never looked back. Another Papi RBI single made it 4-3 and then UVa scored twice more in the fifth and the eighth to salt it away.

Freshman Brandon Waddell got the win on the mound, allowing four earned runs in seven innings. Kyle Crockett came on and pitched the final two frames.

Virginia improved to 44-8 and 21-7 in the ACC. Game Two is Friday evening.
