Western Albemarle senior linebacker Tommy Mullin said the Warriors' two losses to Monticello last season, including a Region II playoff loss, left a bad taste in his mouth.
Mullin and his Warrior teammates got rid of that bad taste in a big way Saturday night as Western trounced Monticello, 28-0, in a battle of unbeatens.
The Warriors, led by a ball-hawking secondary, held the Mustangs to just 48 yards rushing on the night and harassed quarterback Jhalil Mosley into four interception, three by junior Nic Drapanas, including a pivotal fourth-quarter pick-six that blew the game open.
"All week we were just working on the passing game. We knew we had to stop the run but we knew the passing would come down to the wire," Drapanas said. "I have to give it to the whole secondary, (Mosley) wouldn't have passed it to my guy if everyone else wasn't covered."
For a game that many expected to be an offensive shootout, only one touchdown was scored in the first half, that on a Steven Hearn 32-yard interception return for Western.
A Kent Henry 1-yard touchdown run in the third made it 14-0 as the teams headed to the fourth.
After Drapanas' third pick made it 21-0, Henry rolled out at the Monticello 32, tucked the ball like he was going to keep it but spotted a wide open Isaiah Cowan downfield. Cowan walked into the endzone for the final scoring of the contest.
Western (5-0) plays in another huge Jefferson District matchup next week in a home game with defending district champ Powhatan.
Monticello (4-1) makes the short trip across town to Charlottesville.
