Mike Brown made local headlines during his time as Monticello's quarterback and after his Mustang career, signed his national letter of intent to play at Liberty. That is proving to be the right decision, as Brown is one of the best players on a conference-leading team.
The former Mustang is slated to be the starting quarterback of the 2010 Flames. He is also the Big South Conference 2010 Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. Brown is coming off a 2009 season in which he saw time at quarterback, running back and wide receiver and earned Big South Offensive Player of the Year honors. As a running back, he averaged 40.2 rushing yards per game and scored nine touchdowns. He also led the team with 60 receptions and 63.5 receiving yards per game, netting two touchdown catches on the year. As a back-up quarterback, he completed 48-of-68 pass attempts for 427 yards and four passing touchdowns. He did not throw an interception at all last season.
Liberty is the preseason Big South Conference favorite and is ranked 20th in the NCAA FCS preseason poll. The Flames finished 2009 with an 8-3 overall record and 5-1 in conference play. This season, Brown will lead the Flames onto the field to open the season on September 4 when they host St. Francis at City Stadium in Lynchburg.
