After a winless 2009, Albemarle earned a hard fought victory in our Friday Night EndZone Game of the Week. The Patriots topped Western Albemarle, 15-6, earning Mike Alley his first win as Albemarle's head coach. The Patriots got on the board first with a safety in the first quarter, but two Warrior field goals gave them a 6-2 lead at halftime. The Patriots took control in the second, putting together a touchdown drive to open the third quarter capped off by a Michael Bernardino quarterback sneak to give them an 8-6 lead. They would add one more TD and intercept a Western pass late in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.
Monticello exploded against Huguenot for a 45-6 win. The Mustangs led 38-0 at halftime en route to starting the season 2-0. Monticello travels to Powhatan next week. Charlottesville found themselves on the wrong end of a lopsided score, as the Knights fell to James Monroe, 56-0. Chris Fraser's team looks to bounce back next Friday at Albemarle.
William Monroe improves to 2-0 on the season with a 36-19 victory at Madison. It marks the first time the Dragons have beaten the Mountaineers since 2005. Doug Sizemore rushed for 161 yards and two scores to lead Monroe to the win. That performance earned Sizemore our Scrimmage Play Top Performer.
Louisa posted a 27-0 win at Spotsylvania in the Lions' first road game of the season. Louisa improves to 2-0 and gets ready for a tough home game with Courtland next Friday night. Orange also earned the win tonight to pick up its first victory of the season. The Hornets beat Culpeper on Friday, 45-20. They'll travel to James Monroe next week.
Buckingham rolled past Prince Edward on Friday with a 47-13 win. The Knights now 3-0 and have won 13 straight regular season games. Nelson traveled to Riverheads but came up on the short end of a shootout, losing 55-35.
