STAB Moves to 3-0 with Win Over St. Stephen's- St. Agnes

September 16, 2010

Saint Anne's Belfield is off to a hot start in the 2010 season and that continued on Thursday night, as the Saints earned a 23-17 victory in their home opener against St. Stephen's- St. Agnes. STAB improves to 3-0 on the season and is just one win shy of last year's win total.

STAB struck first with a first quarter touchdown to take a 6-0 after a missed PAT try, but the visitors would rally for two first half touchdowns and take a 14-9 lead into the break. St. Stephen's-St. Agnes would extend the lead to 17-9, but STAB would fight back in the second half. Branford Rogers rolled into paydirt from one yard out to cut the lead to 17-15 and the home Saints rallied from there. An exciting hook and ladder play set STAB up well in the visiting Saints' territory, and Rogers capped off the drive with his second score of the night to put St. Anne's up 23-17, and that score held up.

"It's awesome," said head coach John Blake. "We struggled early in the season last year and we've had our times in the first three games where we've been very focused and played very well, and then there were other times where we haven't been focused and we've been bad. I told the kids that this one I think will get us refocused and I think now they know what they can do and how they can play. It's awesome, it's a great feeling, we beat a good team, and I'm just happy."

It marked the Saints' closest call of the young season. STAB topped Bishop Sullivan, 27-7, to open things up, and came back with a 20-6 win at Virginia Episcopal last week.

Blake's team will be back in action next Friday night when the Saints host Trinity at 7:00 pm. Click on the above video link to view full highlights and hear from Coach Blake.
