The Monticello Mustangs advanced to the Region II Finals with a 21-17 win over John Handley in playoff action tonight. The win comes in the Mustangs first postseason appearance since 2004.
The Judges scored the first points of the game in the second quarter, as quarterback J-J Dorsey rushed from four yards out on a QB keeper. The two teams went into the locker room at halftime with Handley on top, 7-0.
The second half is when the Mustangs exploded. Monticello scored all three touchdowns in the second half, and all three were scored by Takeem Hedgeman. The senior tailback finished the night with 208 yards rushing and three touchdowns. Michael Graham was seven-for-seven passing in the second half to help fuel the victory.
Monticello took the 14-10 lead in the third quarter, but the Judges came back to make it 17-14 late in the fourth. The Mustangs final drive was four plays, all to Hedgeman, which finished with him rushing for the game winner.
Monticello now advances to the Region II Championship. The Mustangs will host Millbrook next Friday night. Millbrook snuck by Briar Woods, 27-24, in the other Region II Quarterfinal.
Meanwhile, Saint Anne's Belfield is one win away from successfully defending its state championship, and the Saints will get that chance tomorrow afternoon. STAB will battle Virginia Episcopal tomorrow at 1:00 for the Virginia Independent Schools Championship.
After starting the season 0-3, the Saints have responded, winning their final four games of the regular season, and knocking off rival Blue Ridge in the semifinals last Saturday.
