The outlook is optimistic for the Buckingham County Knights, who have won 19 regular season games over the last two seasons. Now, they have their sights set on a state tournament bid, even VHSL title.
Buckingham has bowed out of playoffs in region play each of the last two seasons, both years ousted by postseason rival Gretna. In 2011, region play has been eliminated for Class A and teams will qualify for states through sectionals. Sixteen teams from the eastern and western divisions will qualify for the state tournament and compete for the Division 1 and 2 crowns.
Buckingham's road to a championship starts with a new and improved James River District as three to teams enter the mix. The additions of Bluestone, Nottoway, and Group AA Goochland make it an 8-team district competition.
The Knights return 8 players on each side of the ball, but need to replace three all-state and two all-region talents from 2010 including 2000 yard rusher Maurice Taylor.
Buckingham opens the season Friday August 26.
