Fork Union Military is known for producing both quality football players and winning results. After a mediocre regular season, the 2010 Blue Devils battled to win the VISAA state championship and look for a repeat year in 2011.
"We have two goals at Fork Union" said head coach Micky Sullivan. "Get into playoffs and winning. That's what we talk about from day one."
That's what we look for everyday, agreed senior lineman John Tu'uta. "That's sometimes what we break it down to, one stop at a time. We're trying to get to playoffs and then do what we did this year.
The Blue Devils finished with a 5-5 mark in the regular season before winning back to back games en route to their first title since 2002.
Quarterback Christian Hackenberg returns for his junior season after already receiving Division I offers from Tennessee and Virginia. As a sophomore, he threw for 1165 passing yards and 11 touchdowns.
"He has a maturity beyond his age and he's gotten better every week, said Coach Sullivan. "He works really hard at being good."
This year, it's a challenge to replace running backs Andre Parker and Richie Dyer, both competing at the Division I level this fall.
Coach Sullivan says there are plenty of new faces ready to step in.
"It's fun to see how they're gonna mix and intermingle. Who's gonna step up as leaders and who're gonna be the great players and what's the journey going to be like 'til the end."
FUMA meets Orange County Friday in a benefit game and open the regular season September 3 against Georgetown Prep.
