Five high school teams from our area are still alive in regional or state playoffs. Three teams are in regional semifinal action, while two others continue play in states.
The Charlottesville girls topped Millbrook last night in Region II quarterfinal action. Shawntae Payne led the way with 23 points, while Shalita Brown posted a double-double of 18 points and eleven rebounds. The Knights travel to Loudoun County for semifinal action tomorrow night. Loudoun and Charlottesville met for the Region II title back in 2006, with Loudoun taking the victory. With a victory tomorrow, the Knights earn a ticket to the state playoffs. The Region II championship game takes place at Monticello on Saturday night at 7:00.
On the boys side, Charlottesville earned a quarterfinal bye, and hosts Handley tomorrow in the Region II semifinals. The Judges topped Heritage last night, 62-57, to advance. The Knights' Jefferson District counterpart Orange also plays in the semifinals, traveling to Millbrook. The winners meet in the championship at Monticello on Saturday at 8:45.
While the previous teams are battling to get through regional play, both the Saint Anne's Belfield boys and girls are hoping to stay alive in the VIS state tournament. The Saint boys stayed alive last night, topping Peninsula Catholic, 84-69, behind Brett Goodloe's 23 points. Sixth seeded STAB travels to Potomac tomorrow. Meanwhile, the STAB girls host Flint Hill tomorrow evening at 5:30.
