The Monticello High School football team will not have a chance to defend its state title, as the Mustangs fell to James Monroe 44-41 Saturday in the Division 3 State Semifinals.
James Monroe had a 20-14 lead at the half, and the second half was a shootout. Down 37-35 in the fourth quarter, Monticello quarterback Michael Graham scored on a quarterback keeper to give the Mustangs a six point lead. But on the ensuing JM possession, the Yellow Jackets would take the lead on a Devonte Atkins touchdown run.
Monticello got one last chance to tie the game or take the lead, but on the very next play, Graham was picked off by Atkins to end the game.
The Mustangs finish the season with a record of 11-2.
