The Covenant girls basketball team took the court in first round VIS state tournament action on Tuesday evening. The Eagles entered as the eighth seed in the tournament, and played host to ninth seeded Atlantic Shores. In a close game that featured defense on both sides, Covenant earned the 32-25 victory. The Eagles will face top seeded Norfolk Christian Wednesday at 5:30.
The Eagle boys also tasted victory and stayed alive. Covenant advanced to the state quarterfinals with a 58-55 win over Cape Henry. Sam Dale led the Eagles with 23 points, and Brian Clarry hit the game winning shot with two seconds to play. Covenant will face Atlantic Shores in quarterfinal action Wednesday.
Meanwhile, several other teams will take the court in their state tournaments this weekend. The Madison boys will face Northampton on Saturday at 4:30 in the Division 2 state quarterfinals. That game will tip off at Monticello High School, as the Mountaineers put their 27-0 record on the line.
The Charlottesville boys will take the court at Monticello prior to the Mountaineers. The Black Knights take on Tabb Saturday at 2:00 in the Division 4 quarterfinals. Mitch Minor's team won the Region II title this past Saturday.
Orange was the team that Charlottesville topped, but the Hornets' state title hopes are still alive. Orange will travel to Richmond to take on Courtland at the Siegel Center on Saturday in the Division 4 quarterfinals. That match up will tip off at 6:45.
Girls action will find Charlottesville taking the court on Friday night at Christopher Newport University. The Black Knights will battle Grafton in the Division 4 quarterfinals at 7:00.
