Dan River ended Madison's perfect season, defeating the Mountaineers by a final of 57-54 in the state semifinals.
The Moutaineers were in control for much of the first half and led 26-17 at the break. They would lead by double-digits in the third quarter and took an 8 point lead into the fourth quarter.
But Dan River would make its charge in the fourth quarter, thanks to a couple big 3-pointers from Dantony Dickerson. He hit a 3-pointer early in the fourth to cut the lead to two, and then connected on a deep three with 3:45 to play that gave Dan River its first lead of the second half.
The two teams would trade baskets down the stretch. Then with 25 seconds remaining, Madison's Matt Garr got fouled and made both free throws to give Madison a one point lead. But the Wildcats would respond on their next possession. Trey Edmunds drove and hit a shot off the glass with less than 11 seconds to go, giving the lead back to Dan River. Madison had one last shot to win it, but Jerel Carter's jumper went off the side of the backboard, and Sam Utz was unable to get a shot off after grabbing the rebound. Dickerson secured the ball for Dan River, as the Wildcats went on for the three point win, advancing to the state championship game.
Logan Terrell led all scorers with 18 points and 9 rebounds. Carter was the only other Mountaineer in double-figures with 14. Reggie Stone led the way for Dan River with 16, while Dickerson added 14 off the bench.
Madison finishes the season with a record of 28-1.
