Monticello senior Shawn Winfrey has accomplished a lot during his time as a Mustang. He earned 2008 Second Team All-State honors as a defensive lineman on the football team, and helped the Mustangs reach the state semifinals. He is also a state runner-up in wrestling, where he finished his senior season with a 40-2 mark. Winfrey also is an experienced violinist, but had to overcome a great deal to get to this point.
Winfrey has spent time in foster care throughout his life. He first entered the system when he was four years old, but went back to his parents at age six. By 13, he was back in foster care, and according to Winfrey, he started getting into trouble.
However, instead of continuing on that path, he decided to turn things around. After successful years in the Charlottesville schools, Winfrey entered Monticello following ninth grade. It was there he discovered his football skills, and continued on the right path.
