Many area teams took the field for action on Friday night, some looking to begin runs towards hopeful state titles, with others looking to cap of memorable regular seasons. Mother Nature also had a hand in things as several of Friday's scheduled games were postponed.
Western Albemarle was set to take the field against Skyline in the Region II quarterfinals, but weather got in the way. The Warriors and Hawks saw their game postponed until Saturday afternoon at 1:00 pm. The site of that match up was moved as well, as the game will be played on Monticello High School's turf field. The Warriors are 9-1 on the season, while Skyline enters the contest with a 6-4 record. The winner will play Park View in the Region II semifinals next week.
Goochland took the field at Monticello Friday to face Millbrook in the other Region II quarterfinal. This match up was moved to Monticello due to the rain that soaked the Bulldogs' home field over the past several days. Goochland tallied a shutout for the second straight week, downing Millbrook, 21-0. The Bulldogs move on to face undefeated Handley in the Region II semifinals.
On the Division 4 side, Louisa traveled to Liberty Bealeton for quarterfinal action in Region II and took part in a low scoring affair, which is unusual for the Lions. Mark Fischer's club wound up on the losing end of things, falling to Liberty, 14-6. The Lions end their season with a 7-4 record and were making their first playoff appearance since 2006.
Meanwhile, several area teams were putting the cap on the regular season. Madison welcomed Clarke to its home field for a battle of two 9-0 teams. Both were in search of a Bull Run District title and Clarke made no mistake about which was the better team Friday night, rolling past the Mountaineers, 47-7. The two-headed monster of Sam Shiley and Zack Shiley accounted for a majority of the Clarke scoring, combining for six touchdowns on the night.
Buckingham had originally planned to go for a perfect regular season on Friday, but will have to wait until Monday. The Knights will take on Central on Monday in hopes of a James River District title, after rain postponed Friday's originally scheduled meeting.
Nelson capped off its regular season with a loss on Friday. The Governors fell at Altavista, 42-13.
