The Jefferson District girls championship match up is set for Friday night after Tuesday's semifinals produced two lopsided wins at Monticello High School. The top two seeds in Fluvanna and Western Albemarle advanced to the championship game, and both did so in convincing fashion.
Fluvanna opened up the night's festivities against William Monroe in the first semifinal match up. The Flucos improved to 19-1 on the season and remained perfect in district play with a 54-34 win over the Dragons. Millicent Williams scored a game high 15 points to lead the way, while Mia and K-anna Loyd each chipped in 13 points.
Western Albemarle had some early trouble with Orange, but ran away with the victory in the end, winning 66-41. The Hornets opened the game on a 5-0 run, but the Warriors charged back and took the lead in the second quarter for good. Ellen Shaffrey stole the show for Western, scoring a game high 19 points and pulling down 14 rebounds. The Warriors have won ten of their last eleven games and will look to hand Fluvanna its first district loss in Friday's championship game.
Between the contests the All-Jefferson District Teams were announced. First team honors went to both Loyd sisters of Fluvanna, Western's Shaffrey, Sade Johnson of Orange and Javanique Burruss of Louisa. Mia Loyd was named Division Three District Player of the Year, while Burruss took Division Four honors. Fluvanna head coach Chad White and Orange head coach Dave Rabe earned Jefferson District Coach of the Year honors in Divisions Three and Four, respectively.
