Area High School Teams Have Success in Region Tournament Openers

Tuesday night proved to be a good one for many local high school basketball teams. Region tournament play tipped off for several area squads, with all of our local teams staying alive and advancing.

The Madison boys had no trouble with Buffalo Gap in the Region B quarterfinals. The Mountaineers led 25-4 after one quarter and rolled to the 86-32 victory. Trey Hensley led Madison with 18 points, which were comprised of six three pointers. Logan Terrell added 16 points as the Mountaineers improve to 21-0. Madison will face Luray at Orange Couny High School on Thursday in the Region B semifinals. Tip off is set for 7:00 pm.

Covenant tipped off as the top seed in the VIC tournament on Tuesday and had little problem with Holy Cross. After a close first quarter, the Eagles pulled away from the Gaels to secure the 61-36 victory. They'll take the court for the VIC semifinals on Thursday. Covenant will host the match up at 5:00 pm against a to-be-determined opponent.

Girls action saw Western Albemarle pull away from Skyline in the fourth quarter of the Region II quarterfinals and grab the 39-32 win. The Warriors were led by Virginia Carew's 12 points. She hit two crucial three pointers in the decisive fourth quarter. Western will travel to Fluvanna on Thursday for semifinal action in a rematch of the Jefferson District title game.

William Monroe traveled to Handley for its quarterfinal match up and got a big win on the road. The Dragons jumped out to a big lead and held off a late Judges charge to earn the 64-61 win. William Monroe led by 13 points, but Handley trimmed the lead to two before the Dragons put it away. Alex Cave scored 24 points to lead William Monroe, which will travel to top seeded Millbrook on Thursday for the Region II semifinals.
