Albemarle Post 74 used big bats and solid pitching to storm its way to a District 13 Tournament championship, capped off Tuesday night with a 16-3 win over Spotsylvania Post 320. Post 74 goes a perfect 4-0 in the playoff and clinches a berth in the American Legion state tournament next week.
Post 74 wasted no time getting into the run column. Vince Coles slapped a single to right, scoring Eli Hayden to open up the scoring in the first. Logan Furloines also hit a sacrifice fly to score Coles, putting Albemarle up 2-0 after an inning of play. After Spotsylvania closed the gap to 2-1 in its half of the second, Post 74 responded, scoring five more runs in the second inning. Up 4-1, Danny Morris blooped a single into right to score two more and Furloines followed that up with an RBI triple to deep center field, scoring Morris. Albemarle led 7-1 after two innings and cruised from there, earning the 16-3 victory in seven innings.
Jason White got the start on the mound for Post 74 and pitched a gem to earn the win and help get his squad into next week's state tournament.
Morris led the Albemarle squad at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two singles and triple while tallying five RBI.
Post 74 will play defending state champion South Richmond next Tuesday to open up state tournament play. Albemarle defeated that team last week at a tournament in Williamsburg.
