The Albemarle boys soccer team capped off an amazing run through the postseason with a 3-0 shutout of Colonial Forge in the VHSL Group AAA state championship game.
The Patriots were forced to go on the road for much of the Commonwealth and Regional postseason play but somehow managed to overcome each obstacle, leading to championship weekend in Chantilly and yet another matchup with district foe Colonial Forge.
It was the fifth matchup between the Patriots and Eagles this season, with Forge winning the two regular season battles and then beating Albemarle in the Commonwealth championship.
The Patriots got a measure of revenge by winning the Regional final between the two, and topped it off by downing the Eagles for the state title.
Albemarle wasted no time, getting a goal from Marshall in the fourth minute for a 1-0 lead. Matt Natale made numerous saves in net and the Albemarle coaching staff did a great job of substituting, keeping fresh legs on the field on a hot day in Chantilly. The game stayed 1-0 to the half.
The second half then saw Rowan Perry set up Solomon's goal for a 2-0 Patriots lead with 35 minutes to play. That was followed by Zarate's tally with 17 minutes left. Natale and the Albemarle defense held on from there for the shutout.
