On Saturday night, the Albemarle boys' basketball team protected their home court with a 72-55 victory over non-league rival Western Albemarle. In addition to the regular hype of a rivalry battle was the annual showdown between brothers Greg and Darren Maynard. Older brother Greg is in his 23rd season with the Patriots and it's Darren's 16th at the helm of the Warriors.

"I feel good right now since we came out on top," said AHS coach Greg Maynard. "It's not a game that I enjoy coaching against my brother, but it's great for the fans and the county so we do it. He'll bounce back, he does a great job with his team."

Kendall Hawkins led the Patriots Saturday with 14 points in the first half, and a game-high 28 points total. Teammate Andrew Mann added 18, helping overcome a slow start in the opening half.

"Western plays so hard so you have to equal their intensity and I think we did in the second half," said Maynard of his Patriots. "They were getting a lot of loose balls in the first half, but in the second we did our share and got in our running game."

"It feels good, always want to go against a rival team," said Hawkins after the game. "Knowing that it's my coaches brother, kind of makes it even tougher to play."

The Maynards are both graduates of Albemarle and Bridgewater College where they played basketball. This is the only meeting between the two brothers this season, a change to the home and away series in the past. It was necessary to open a spot for Albemarle's new Commonwealth opponent, Orange County, on their schedule.

Other reported scores from Saturday December 10:

Louisa 64, Orange 75

Albemarle 36, Western Albemarle 28
Louisa 55, Orange 29
